SC extends stay on ex MP Rana’s bail

Shawdesh Desk: The Supreme Court extended for one more week the stay on a High Court order that granted bail to former Awami League lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in a double-murder case.

Besides, the state was asked to file regular appeal by Monday (July 8).

The Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain issued the order Monday (July 1).

Deputy Attorney General Dr Bashir Ullah confirmed the matter to media.

After hearing a rule on June 19, the HC bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman granted bail to former Tangail-3 lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in the case filed over killing two Jubo League leaders in Tangail sadar upazila’s Baghil union in 2012.

But, the next day the Supreme Court stayed 1 the bail order till July 1.

Earlier, on March 6, the High Court granted a six-month bail to Rana in the same case.

In a rule, the court then asked the government to reply why Rana should not be granted permanent bail in the case.

On March 23, the Supreme Court upheld its chamber judge’s order that stayed a HC verdict that granted bail to Rana.

On March 14, Chamber court of the Appellate Division has stayed the six-month bail earlier granted by the High Court to the former AL MP in the double murder. On the same day, Rana was granted bail for six months by the HC in freedom fighter Faruq murder case.

On January 18 in 2013, freedom fighter and Awami League’s Tangail District Committee member Faruq Ahmed was shot dead. Later a case was filed in this connection accusing Rana and others.

Rana was sent to jail by a Tangail court on September 18, 2016, in Faruq murder case.
